Steinbach is one of Germany’s best known producers of Nutcrackers and German Smokers. Steinbach has created over 600 different nutcracker designs and has about 150 different designs in continuous production. The different characters and motifs range from the traditional including Kings, Guards, Brewmasters and other traditional German occupations to characters from the Nutcracker Suite, Star Wars, Civil War Generals and Harley Davidson riders.
Steinbach creates over 100,000 nutcrackers each year entirely by hand.
History of Steinbach
Steinbach has been producing the highest quality German folk art for the last 180 years. Karla Steinbach is currently in charge of the company and she is a 6th generation Steinbach to do so.
The company was founded in Marienberg, Germany which is located in the Erzgebirge or Ore Mountains. This factory is called Werk 2. This factory operated from the 1830s up to the end of WWII. Marienberg is located in East Germany and was part of DDR. The Steinbach family relocated the business to Hohenhamen in Lower Saxony in West Germany and continued production. The factory in Hohenhamen is called Werk 1. After the fall of the wall and the German unification, the Steinbachs reopened the factory in Marienberg and now operates both factories. The company now employs approximately 130 employees.
How are Steinbach Nutcrackers are Made
Linden wood is the preferred type of wood used to make nutcrackers and German smokers. The rough cut lumber is delivered freshly harvested to the factories. The wood is then allowed to dry to a specific moisture content to create a thermally stable finish product.
A typical nutcracker and have up to 150 different parts. Each part is individually turned, cut, sanded and stained or painted. A piece and take 6 weeks to create from beginning to end. Each factory employs groups of turners working on the lathe, carpenters, painters, artist, printers and tailors. Each piece is designed and created to have the signature Steinbach look and even an untrained eye can spot a Steinbach by just a quick glance at the figures face. Collecting Steinbach Nutcrackers
Steinbach nutcrackers are highly collectable and have been resold at many times the original selling price. Steinbach reports that a three pack of nutcrackers was once sold for 10,000 USD and a single Merlin limited edition nutcracker sold for 5,000 USD.
